Some leaks pooling under your vehicle are cause for concern, while others barely present a problem. Knowing how to discern whether a leak falls into one category or another will make it easier to know when to schedule repairs.

  • Water is the most common substance you’ll see, most often the result of condensation on your air conditioning unit; it’s not a cause for concern.
  • Motor oil is easy to recognize and often punctuates your driveway. It’s the result of a lax seal somewhere, and addressing it now will spare you more expensive repairs later.
  • Differential fluid looks very similar to motor oil but smells much more strongly. It’s leaking from your axels and needs addressing before you’re unable to drive your car.
  • Yellowish brake fluid is the most alarming. You should schedule an appointment with a technician immediately.
  • Antifreeze is bright green or even orange and will lead to an overheating engine if the level falls too low.
